There are many times when I start a session where mom will just hand over her baby and I get to work without much input from mom or dad. This morning was no different. I started working with this little one, she was a bit fussy, but nothing I couldn’t handle. After a short time, it was clear to me that she just wanted to be cuddled. That wouldn’t work if I wanted to get photos of her, so I did the next best thing and put her into a tight swaddle. She drifted quickly off to sleep. I photographed her some then removed the swaddle once she was really asleep and she awoke and became fussy almost immediately. Her mommy sat back and quietly watched. When I asked if they swaddle at home… mom said that they had for a few days, but then stopped. Sweet little girl isn’t sleeping well for mom and dad at all. Mom was very excited to see how the swaddle really helped to calm her down. If I had spoken to mom when we were starting the session, mom may have mentioned that she didn’t like swaddling and I would have been at a loss. Sometimes you just have to figure things out by doing. This is the case with being a parent at times. (ESPECIALLY a parent of a newborn). Trial and error is the way to go. I hope that this morning wasn’t just a fluke for that sweet baby and the swaddle works for her parents this evening!
